Pete Winstead is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Texas Law School. After four years with the Department of Justice Tax Division, he was the Founding Shareholder of the Winstead PC law firm in Dallas in 1983. Today, the firm has over 325 lawyers in seven cities. He was a past Chairman of the Tax Section of the Dallas Bar Association and the Tax Section of the State Bar of Texas.
Pete came to Austin in 1987 to open Winstead’s office. The firm was lead counsel in Dell Computer’s IPO in the spring of 1988, and he has continued to work for the founders of that company. He has undertaken major representation of companies involved in the Mueller Airport redevelopment and entities involved in numerous projects at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, including the food, beverage and retail. He has specialized in assisting companies coming to Central Texas to establish a business presence and secure opportunities.
As a past Chairman of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, he has assisted in the recruitment of companies and in securing incentives where appropriate. Pete is past Chairman of the Economic Development Corporation under the Opportunity Austin program at the Chamber. He was an initial board member of the Central Texas Angel Network (“CTAN”) to support the continuation of seed capital funding following the “dot-com bust” of 2000.
Pete has served as the President or Chairman of the Capital Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Austin Area Research Organization (“AARO”), St. Edwards University, the Austin Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Turnpike Authority, the United Way of the Capital Area, the Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council, Camp Coca-Cola, and the Real Estate Council of Austin (“RECA”). He chaired the United Way Campaign in Austin in 2000 and has been involved in capital campaigns for the YMCA of Austin, the Boy Scouts, and numerous other organizations. He is presently chairing the capital campaign for the Dell Seton Medical Center at UT, the new teaching hospital and Level 1 trauma facility being constructed adjacent to the Dell Medical School. He is the President-Elect of the Greater Austin Crime Commission and serves on the board of the American Heart Association.
Pete has been honored as Austinite of the Year, recipient of the Anti-Defamation League “Jurisprudence Award”, the Travis County Bar Assn. “Distinguished Lawyer” award, the Austin Business Journal Neal Kocurek Life Time Achievement Real Estate Award, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (“AFP”) Special Recognition Award. He has been pleased to serve as a member of the ATX Seed Ventures LP Advisory Council.
